Preparing Family Caregivers for Challenging Situations Related to Eating Disorders

Eating disorders, particularly bulimia nervosa, are a major public health issue whose prevalence is on the rise both in Switzerland and internationally. This chronic condition affects approximately 1–2% of the population.
Beyond the direct impact on people suffering from bulimia nervosa, these disorders have a significant effect on those around them, particularly family caregivers, who find themselves facing a heavy emotional, organizational, and social burden, often with little recognition or structured support: a sense of helplessness in the face of crises, guilt about the role they do or do not play, emotional exhaustion and social isolation, and a lack of practical and reliable resources to respond appropriately.

The proposed solution is a mobile app that allows family caregivers to practice in a risk-free environment, build their sense of competence, and reduce their anxiety about real-life crises, while providing structured support that can be recommended or used in conjunction with professional care. To this end, the app offers four main features:

  • Real-Life Situations: Scenarios to help you practice recognizing the signs and choosing the right response
  • Good Habits: A reference page you can access quickly, even in stressful situations
  • Logbook: A personal space to document your journey and gain perspective
  • Emergency Contacts: Numbers and resources available with just one click
