A community hub to combat isolation among the over-65s
Social isolation of the elderly is a growing problem that affects both mental and physical health. The loss of loved ones, departure from the world of work and physical limitations all contribute to reducing social ties, increasing the risk of depression, cognitive decline and premature mortality. Although socialization initiatives do exist, many fail to reach older people effectively due to logistical difficulties or the perceived complexity of using current technologies.
In Switzerland, more than 26% of people over 55 suffer from loneliness, representing 444,500 people. A socially isolated person is someone who has very few social contacts, or who voluntarily or involuntarily detaches themselves from supportive relationships. This isolation can take the form of a lack of regular interaction with friends, family or the community, and often results in a feeling of disconnection and chronic loneliness. Unlike those who choose moments of solitude, socially isolated people tend to feel excluded, which can have negative effects on many aspects of their health.
Social isolation can lead to cognitive decline, depression and anxiety, cardiovascular risk, physical decline and premature mortality.
The solution proposed in this project is :
- The use of a connected interactive board as a central point for organizing and coordinating activities, whether on-site or off-site. Thanks to an intuitive interface, users can easily register for activities. The interactive board is also linked to an online website to include people who can’t travel.
- For example, people with reduced mobility can post “requests for help” such as: “Help me mow my lawn” or “I need help with my housework”. These offers will be visible directly on the interactive board, promoting local and accessible mutual aid.
