Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects around 5% of the Swiss population, of whom 0.4% are classified as “severe”. This disease is difficult to detect because it develops for several years without symptoms. As soon as symptoms appear, the disease is already in the acute stage. The people most affected are the over-65s, and the disease rarely manifests itself before the age of 45.

At present, there is no cure for CKD. However, certain treatments can reduce symptoms and increase patients’ lifespan. These treatments may involve medication, dialysis or transplantation.

The main need of patients with end-stage CKD at the start of treatment/diagnosis is a means of finding out about their condition/treatment during dialysis sessions or beforehand, as this involves major changes in their daily lives that need to be understood.

The concept proposed here is an augmented reality educational tool used during dialysis.Informative scenarios and educational games are explained by an avatar. The scenarios currently implemented are :

  • an educational scenario on chronic renal failure, including explanations of the following theoretical concepts: kidney function, the disease, dialysis and nutrition
  • an educational game focusing on theoretical explanations of nutrition
